Information about Bon Jovi Rexall Place
Bon Jovi began in Sayreville, New Jersey, where Jon & his 2 brothers were raised by they parents. By his early teens, Jon was hanging out at local clubs, convinced that 1 day he would be a rock star. By the time he was 16, Jon was playing clubs. It was not long before he hooked up with keyboardist David Bryan, who played with him in a 10 piece rhythm & blues band called Atlantic City Expressway. Jon also performed with bands called The Rest, The Lechers & John Bongiovi & the Wild Ones. Meanwhile, Richie Sambora was also performing locally with a funk & fusion band called "Extremes", before hooking up with Alec John Such in the band "The Message". After The Message, Alec played with Tico Torres in Phantom's Opera. The members of Bon Jovi crossed paths in these early days, but the current lineup didn't come together until March of 1983 after the 1rst Bon Jovi single, "Runaway," had become a hit. In one of those scenarios, right person, right place, right time, Jon managed to get a job at a recording studio. Jon's cousin, Tony Bongiovi, was a co/owner of the Power Station in New York City. Jon had written "Runaway," & in 1980, he recorded the demo of the song.
A local radio station WAPT included "Runaway" on a compilation tape, & the song started getting some serious airplay. "Runaway" got Jon noticed, & by touring he could capitalize on the popularity of the song. To support the single Jon gave Dave, Alec & Tico a call, & finally Richie signed on, & the band came together. At 1 show, where they opened for Scandal, the band caught the attention of record exec Derek Shulman, who signed them to PolyGram Records. PolyGram toyed with the name, before Shulman anglicized John Bongiovi's name to Bon Jovi. Their self titled debut came out January 21 st, 1984. Filled with the groups now signature power ballads & hooked filled tunes underscored by soaring guitar riffs & well crafted melodies, the album went gold. The album was a rugged soulful collection of songs about how tough it is being a teenager. Bon Jovi released their follow up album, "7800 Fahrenheit", in April 1985; it sold equally to its predecessor. A few tours opening for Kiss, Judas Priest & the Scorpions had helped Bon jovi build up a considerable fan base which appreciated the band's songs & powerful stage presence.
Slippery When Wet, the band's 3 rd album, provided the break trough the band needed. Powered by songs like "You Give Love A Bad Name", "Wanted Dead or Alive" & "Livin' on a Prayer", the LP went gold & platinum simultaneously within 6 weeks of its release. By April of 1987, "Slippery When Wet" sold 7 million copies worldwide. Bon Jovi won the American Music Award & People's Choice Awards for Band Of The Year, & MTV gave Bon Jovi a Best Performance Award for the video "Livin' on a Prayer". By the time the Slippery Tour finished in Hawaii on October 17 th, 1987, the album had sold in excess of 14 million copies, putting it in the same league as Michael Jackson's Thriller.
Information about the Rexall Place
Rexall Place (formerly known as the Northlands Coliseum, Edmonton Coliseum and Skyreach Centre) is an indoor arena in Edmonton , Alberta , Canada . The arena is home to the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League and Edmonton Rush of the National Lacrosse League. Beginning in 2007-08, Rexall will also host the Edmonton Oil Kings, a Western Hockey League team owned by the Oilers. The arena was completed in 1974 as the Northlands Coliseum to house the World Hockey Association Oilers. Then it became the Edmonton Coliseum in 1995, and Skyreach Centre in 1998, before it changed to its current name during the middle of the 2003-04 NHL season.
The official capacity for hockey is currently 16,839, which is slightly less than the 17,100 the arena held before the 2003-04 NHL season. Some media sources still quote the old capacity even though the Oilers have never announced an attendance above 16,839 since the most recent changes. When it opened, the capacity was slightly more than 15,200, but it was increased to 17,353 after the Oilers joined the NHL by adding an extra tier of seating on the side opposite the pressbox. This was increased to 17,503 in 1984. The arena underwent an extensive renovation in 1994, in which 67 luxury suites were installed, reducing the capacity to 17,100. The arena is currently named after the Rexall medicine company, a subsidiary of Katz Group Canada which purchased the naming rights in December 2003.
A large bronze statue of Canadian hockey icon and former Oilers Captain Wayne Gretzky is situated outside of Rexall Place .
Northlands Coliseum was used to host games in the 1981 and 1984 Canada Cup hockey tournaments, including Game 2 of the 1984 finals between Canada and Sweden . In the 1995 World Junior Championships, which where held in various cities and towns throughout Alberta , Edmonton Coliseum was the site of several games, including Canada 's 6-3 victory over Finland on New Year's Day.
The venue was the site of several Commonwealth Games sports in 1978, and part of Universiade (the World University Games) in 1983. Annual events include the Canadian Finals Rodeo and the Christian Conference, YC Alberta [2].
